Friday Might: Adam Mayfield

Image
Scott Chandler, the son of Cindy Parker (played by Guiding Light Executive Producer, Ellen Wheeler back in the day) a PLWA in fictional Pine Valley, married sweet Stuart Chandler who adopted Scott and raised him as his own. The story line was ground breaking not only because it dealt with the stigma of HIV/AIDS early on, but it also showed that the HIV-positive were worthy of true love and could indeed live out their dream. Scott has returned to All My Children in the person of Adam Mayfield who has been part of Boston Public , Girlfriends , Just Shoot Me as well as Sea of Fear , Corpse Run and most recently the spy thriller, Rushin’ . The 6’2” actor is one for those of you who have never met a Texan you didn’t like. As a matter of fact we have it on good authority that he is quite on the ball. "Cool" was the exact terminology used. Of course, he is, because he became part of POZevent last May. We’re glad to have the chance to get to know one of the good guys a little bet

Gay ThursDay: The Temperamentals

Image
Gernreich, Rudi (1922-1985) Along with British designer Mary Quant, Rudi Gernreich was one of the true avatars of 1960s fashion, responsible for thrusting haute couture into the mainstream of popular culture. His most famous--or infamous--contributions were the topless bathing suit (for women) and the no-bra bra. Riding the crest of mod, psychedelic, and sex-centered fashion, Gernreich pioneered the use of cut-outs, plastics, and unisex styles. The contemporary image of 1960s fashion as symbolized by willowy models wearing brightly colored, vibrantly patterned, and revealing clothing owes much to Gernreich's contributions. Gernreich was born in Austria on August 8, 1922. He and his mother fled Hitler's growing power by emigrating to the United States following the Anschluss of 1938. After studying art and a brief stint as a professional dancer, Gernreich began working in the fashion industry in the 1950s. While he achieved modest success, it was not until the swinging 1960s t

Sunday Songs: I took this man's love and put it on a shelf.

Mainstream R'n'B is rife with advice. You can go back in classic urban blues as far back as Bessie Smith and Sippie Wallace and find advice for the lovelorn, especially women who pay no heed to warning signs. "Clean Up Woman" is probably Betty Wright's biggest hit. It was a crossover top ten hit. The song Still resonates as evidenced by Betty's live perforamnce. This is Miami soul at its best. Thrown in for good measure two more great songs from Betty. A Clean up woman is a woman who gets all the love we girls leave behind. The reason I know so much about her is because she picked up a man of mine. Jumpin' slick was my ruin 'cause, I found out all I was doing was makin' it easy, for the Clean up woman to get my man's love ah yeah Just making it easy for the clean up woman to get my baby's love ah hum, um hum. I took this man's love and put it a shelf and like a fool I thought I had him all to myself. When ya needed love I was out havin

Saturday Beefcake: Seafood Pasta

Image
Here is one of the bigger hits in these parts, which works very well with fresh pasta. It is a mainstay of Italian American families in the Northeast during the summer. Even Tom Colicchio of Top Chef remembers it lovingly. This is a creamy variation. Pasta Fresca ai Granchi Extra Virgin Olive Oil Garlic Clove, minced Italian Parsley, minced Peperoncino, crushed Crab Meat, 500 grams White wine or Prosecco Plum Tomatoes, chopped [imported canned do very well] half cup Fresh Heavy Cream Fresh Egg Pasta, 500 grams 1. Get a large skillet large enough to hold the pasta later. The pasta should be of a ribbon type – taglierini, tagliatelle, fettuccine or even Pappardelle. 2. Heat olive oil in the very same skillet, about a half cup, add the garlic, crushed red pepper and the parsley, for about one minute 3. Add the crab meat, stir while cooking for another five minutes – add some sea salt to taste and pour in the wine and cook until it evaporates. 4. Add the tomatoes and cook for another ten m

Gay Thursday: One Life to Live

Kyle and Roxy have a certain je ne sais quoi . Ilene Kristen can bring the best out in anybody. Well, that in no way demeans the flawed, yet sympathetic character of Kyle as portrayed by Brett Claywell. [above, during his One Tree Hill days.] Wednesday, July 22 2009: A Night To Remember... Still outside of Kyle's room, Cris finishes reading the letter from Fish then Kyle appears, asking, "What're you doing here?" Cris admits by reading the letter he thought he could get some answers then Kyle snatches the letter away, reads it, but refuses to give Cris answers, saying what happened between him and Fish was between them! However, when Cris threatens to find out what happened with Fish on his own, Kyle admits that Fish was with someone in college, someone he was crazy about, but that Fish made promises he couldn't keep - he couldn't go the distance. "Fish cared more about what people thought about, so he walked away," Kyle says, "acted like it nev

Tuesday Talent: Ryan Phillippe

Image
Okay, so these pics are not the shirtless ones posted over on TMZ, but Ryan Phillippe has punim for days and that's the focus here. With so many gay men populating Daytime drama, it's good to remember the great work the teenaged Mr. Phillippe did on One Life to Live . Go here to the main site for OLTL's 1992 story line . There were other pioneers: Brian Starcher on As the World Turns , Chris Bruno on All My Children , and Donna Pescow on All My Children .

Monday Muse: Vampire Vikings of Sodom

Image
Set in some ancient Viking forest, Eric's transformation at the hands of Godric, a ripped and barely-legal teenager with no shirt and a torso full of runic tattoos, is a homoerotic fever dream. It's also a compelling new vision of how vampires are made. We've seen Lorena turn Bill with deceitful selfishness, and we've seen Bill turn Jessica with a tidal wave of guilt. When Godric makes Eric, however, he does it with admiration. He's so impressed by Eric's warrior soul that he decides he can be a "companion of death". He bestows vampirism like a gift on a great man who is about to die. -- Mark Blankenship at The Huffington Post .

Sunday Songs: Bob Dylan

Giano is in this video and can be clearly seen as he was twenty-five years ago at 8:24. Don't let that distract you from some great sounds. The words "icon" and "legend" get thrown around too much these days. Here is where they belong.
